Podestarile Palace

The headquarters of the Municipality of Rho

Heasquarters of the Municipality of Rho, the Palazzo Podestarile (known as Palazzo Comunale) was built between 1929 and 1931 at the behest of the Podestà Cav. Eraldo Bonecchi. The need to create a new Town Hall emerged urgently following the unification of the municipalities of Mazzo Milanese, Terrazzano and Lucernate, of the Passirana hamlet of Lainate, with the Municipality of Rho, established by King Vittorio Emanuele in 1928. The palace, located in the central Visconti Square, was built in just 18 months, in a historicist style that recalls the architecture of the Visconti and Sforza castles, with the typical Lombard brick embellished with mullioned windows, battlements, graffiti decorations and a crenellated tower 30 meters high.

Address:

Piazza Visconti, 23 Rho MI

Open for visits:

The palace can only be visited on the occasion of organized guided tours and/or on request

A symbol of the city's history

This Palace thus assumes the role of identifying icon of the modern city of Rho. A role that did not end with the initial events, but which has continued in recent years: in 2016 the Town Hall again marked a passage of the City of Rho to a greater stage, and this time at an international level. On the occasion of the Dalai Lama's visit to the Rho Fair, the Town Hall hosted for a few days the Tibetan monks who created the Mandala for the Dalai Lama's blessing in the Hall of Lost Steps. On that occasion, the Dalai Lama was recognized as honorary citizenship of Rho: the Mandala, prepared for the occasion, was donated to the Municipality, which keeps it in a display case visible to the public in the corridor on the first floor.
