You’re in Rho, in northern Italy, located in the province of Milan. The area is traversed by the Olona river, which flows from Varese to Milan and played a crucial role in the region’s industrial development.
The route is named after the Olona river, which winds through the area, eventually merging with the Po river in San Zenone. Along the way, it offers a wealth of historic buildings and stories, immersing visitors in a captivating journey through the past.
Situated in the heart of the valley, the Olona plain has historically served as a vital crossroads, connecting various cultural landmarks.
What can you see along the route?
Starting point: tourist infopoint in Piazza San Vittore
Begin your journey at the tourist infopoint in Rho’s central Piazza San Vittore.
Cycle along Corso Europa to visit
- Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, a significant Lombard place of worship.
- Villa Burba, a historic villa now housing a library and overlooking Parco Europa.
Northwest towards the Villoresi canal
Follow the Olona cycle route to the Villoresi canal near Nerviano and Parabiago.
Along the canal:
- Discover Villa Litta in Lainate, famous for its ninfeo (fountain room) and Parco del Lura, ideal for picnics and walks.
- Visit La Valera, a stunning 18th-century villa near Arese.
- Stop by the Alfa Romeo museum, a must-see for car enthusiasts.
Garbagnate Milanese to Groane park
From Garbagnate Milanese station, follow the Cavo Arconati canal path to the Parco delle Groane, a protected area spanning 7,700 hectares. Continue to Villa Arconati, an elegant estate with artistic features.
Southwest along the Seveso flood canal
Follow the Canale Scolmatore Seveso to the Centro Sportivo Molinello, a hub for outdoor sports.
If innovation excites you, continue along the Cavo to visit Mind and Fiera di Rho, two major landmarks in the Lombardy region.
Or head south and visit the Fontanili biotope and Oratorio Mantegazza in Cascina Olona, featuring remarkable frescoes from the Lombard school of the 15th century.
Final stretch to Cornaredo and back
- Head towards Cornaredo to see the Ghiacciaia Favaglie, a rare historical icehouse.
- Explore the Parco dei Fontanili, then continue to Pregnana Milanese and Vanzago.
- Conclude your journey at Villa Scheibler, returning to Piazza San Vittore.
