The History of Viticulture in Rho

Until the late 1900s, the province of Milan was known for producing wines that were mild yet flavorful and sweet. Among the most renowned wines of the era were Canegrate, Busto, Magenta, Parabiago, Monza, Oreno, and Mombello, among others.

These wines were celebrated by writers and poets like Giulini and Cattaneo in their works on Lombardy, as well as by the famed poet Carlo Porta.

Over time, however, local wine production declined. The initial blow came from the competition posed by stronger, more sophisticated wines. Later, vineyards suffered from plant diseases, which led to the complete deterioration of the vines. Many farmers were forced to abandon their fields and turn to more stable livelihoods.

Rho’s Historic Wines: Crodello and Casprio

Among Rho’s historic wines, Crodello (a white) and Casprio (a red) stand out for their distinctive characteristics and strong connection to the region.

The dedication and passion of local producers have allowed these wines to maintain their reputation over the years.

  • Crodello: Known for its clarity and subtle flavors.
  • Casprio: Celebrated for its robust, deep notes.

Both wines pair beautifully with the traditional cuisine of Lombardy, especially risotto al vino, a classic Rho recipe.
