On April 24, 1583, in a small chapel, according to contemporary accounts, a painting depicting a Pietà was the protagonist of a miraculous event: the Madonna depicted in it shed tears of blood. Archbishop San Carlo Borromeo ordered the design of a large sanctuary for the Marian shrine in order to commemorate the miracle.

The Sanctuary is a work of imposing dimensions: the dome is 54 metres high with a diameter of 18 and houses numerous works of art by the main Lombard artists of the period.
